HB 2119: schools; academic credits; transfer
Sponsor: Representative Udall, LD 25
Caucus & COW
Overview
Requires an accredited public high school to accept credits earned by a student at another accredited public high school if an in-person proctored final exam accounted for a significant portion of the student's grade.
History
Currently, statute requires charter schools and school districts to accept transfer credits earned by a student at another charter school or school district located in Arizona. District governing boards and charter governing bodies are permitted to adopt policies for the purposes of determining if a student's transfer credits will be assigned as elective or core credit (A.R.S. §§ 15-189.03, 15-701.01).
Both charter schools and school districts must provide a transfer student from a charter school, school district or Arizona online instruction with a list that indicates which transfer credits are accepted as core or elective credit. Within 10 days of receiving the list, a transfer student may request to take a test designed and evaluated by a teacher with the charter school or school district for each transfer credit that was denied for core credit. If the student receives a passing score on the test, the charter school or school district must accept the transfer credit as core credit (A.R.S. § 15-701.01(I)).
